NHS Surrey Heath CCG has been at the forefront of a campaign to promote and improve the care and support for people who are at risk of falling.

‘Walk and Live Confidently’ (WALC) aims to help people stay independent and reduce falls.  It has launched a special helpline for patients, family and carers - 0845 241 7201.

Falls can have a devastating effect on elderly people and their families and can cause serious health risks:

  • Injuries caused by falls are the most common cause of death in over 75s
  • 30% of adults over 65 will fall at least once a year
  • 50% of adults over 80 will fall at least once a year
  • 50% of fallers will fall frequently
  • About 10% of people with hip fracture die within one month and about one third die within 12 months
  • Falls cost the NHS £2.3bn a year

Many elderly people or their family do not know how to get support to prevent a fall or get help when they fall so the WALC campaign, aims to improve access to information and care as well as raise awareness of how to prevent a fall in the first place.

The campaign aims to help people stay independent and prevent risks to reduce falls.
